Outcomes of Hip Arthroscopy in Competitive Athletes

Arthroscopy. 2017 Aug;33(8):1521-1529
DOI: 10.1016/j.arthro.2017.03.006

Purpose

To evaluate minimum 2-year clinical outcomes and return to sports in athletes undergoing capsular plication during hip arthroscopy for ligamentous laxity and/or borderline dysplasia.

Methods

Prospective collection of outcomes from high school, collegiate, or professional athletes undergoing hip arthroscopy including capsular plication. Outcomes assessed by hip scores and pain scale.

Results

Significant improvements in hip scores and pain reduction. 85.4% returned to sports and 82.9% maintained competitive level at follow-up.

Conclusions

Capsular plication in hip arthroscopy is effective in athletes with ligamentous laxity or borderline dysplasia to improve function and facilitate return to sport.

What Does This Mean for Patients

Athletes with joint laxity or borderline dysplasia can benefit from surgery, likely returning to their sport at similar or higher levels with less pain.
