Background

Little is known about how alcohol consumption affects recovery after hip arthroscopy. This study compares the outcomes of hip arthroscopy in patients who drink heavily versus those who abstain from alcohol.

Methods

Patients who consumed alcohol heavily were matched with non-drinking patients based on demographics and clinical factors. Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) were assessed at a minimum of 2 years post-surgery.

Key Findings

Heavy drinkers showed less improvement in functional outcomes and pain reduction compared to non-drinkers. They were also less likely to meet thresholds for good recovery (PASS) on some PROs.

Conclusions

While hip arthroscopy is still beneficial for heavy drinkers, alcohol consumption can negatively impact recovery and functional outcomes. Abstaining from alcohol may improve results.

What Does This Mean for Patients

If you’re undergoing hip arthroscopy and consume alcohol heavily, consider reducing or stopping alcohol intake to improve your recovery and surgical outcomes.
