Hip Arthroscopy & Regenerative Medicine Are Not Just for Athletes

You are probably aware of many elite athletes that have been able bounce back from a debilitating hip injury and return to competitive sports with the help of hip arthroscopy and regenerative medicine treatments. The good news is that these innovative treatments aren’t just for athletes.

The results of several research studies indicate that just about anybody suffering from hip pain can be a candidate.

Regenerative medicine treatments involve platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) derived from your own body being injected into the injured hip to stimulate re-growth of damaged tissue.

The treatments can be conveniently performed in 1-2 hours in the doctor’s office, allowing you to return to routine activities of daily living almost immediately. To optimize hip function, 3 injection cycles may be needed over the course of a few weeks.

Hip arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows your surgeon to look inside the hip joint using an arthroscope (a special tube-like instrument that contains a miniaturized camera) which is inserted through a tiny poke-hole incision in the skin. The magnified images from the arthroscope are viewed on a monitor to accurately identify any hip abnormality. Damaged or torn structures inside the hip may be repaired using narrow instruments inserted through separate portals adjacent to the arthroscope.

Patients are generally discharged home on the same day as the procedure and recover much faster as compared to those undergoing traditional open surgery.

At the American Hip Institute, our philosophy is to treat all our patients as elite athletes using the latest arthroscopic and regenerative medicine treatments.
